We have been cooking!!!!

Last Wednesday Richard from Cooking Together Wales took a cookery workshop with years 3 and 4.
He taught us how to hold knives correctly, how to cut food safely using the bridge and claw techniques. We listened very carefully to what he had to say as we were junior chefs for the time we were cooking.  During our session we made Rainbow Couscous and Berry Cheesecake pots all are very healthy and ideal for lunchboxes.  We used our new knife skills to cut cherry tomaoes, cucumber and pepper in small pieces, watched dehydrated couscous 'come alive' when hot water was added to it. We all had specific jobs to do: 2 people to juice the lemon, 1 or 2 people to 'fluff' up the couscous, 1 person to add the pepper and 1 person to add the sweetcorn. We combined all of these ingredients plus the vegetables we chopped up and mixed it all together. The smell was amazing! We shared it out between us and then cleaned our table with antibacterial spray. Next we made the berry cheesecake pots, we layered oats, frozen mixed fruit, cheescake mix (fat free/low fat youghurt, low fat cream cheese, honey, sweetener and vanilla essence) then topped it with oats and a piece of fruit. We really wanted to eat these straight away but we had to go back to class. We had an amazing time as you can see from our photos!

A visit to our school from the Food Standards Agency

On Monday 28th September our school had a visit from the Food Standards Agency. In the morning we went into the hall to watch a play. It was quite funny, but it was helping us to learn all about food hygiene in the kitchen. We found out about the four C’s. These were:-
Cleaning, Chilling, Cross-contamination & Cooking.
In the afternoon we took part in a workshop session to help us learn about how we can prevent food poisoning.
At the end of the day we all had to answer questions to help get the broken computer working again. We were so good we managed to fix the computer!

Book Review

The Iron Man
Chapter 1 Review

The Iron Man is a story written by Ted Hughes. It starts off with a vast iron figure taller than a house standing at the brink of a cliff with a beach below. Ted has cleverly started the story with questions to hook the reader, Ted uses questions such as, How far had he walked? Where did he come from? How was he made?

He steps into nothingness and falls off the edge of the cliff. He lands on the golden sand as soft as a pillow, parts scattered everywhere.

The Iron man is intelligent enough to pick up his parts and put them together. But he isn’t intelligent enough to know that the sea and giant iron men don’t mix. He slowly walks into the salty water. After a long time of struggling he finally emerges from the sea.

A fisherman’s son called Hogarth is the first to spot this out of the ordinary iron figure. He runs home and tells his beloved father. His Father is the only one who believes him and doesn’t hesitate to get help.
Ted has used his words carefully and has described everything amazingly. After many re-drafts Ted has come up with a gem of a book. He has used many different techniques to hook the reader, such as repetition and personification:
  • the sea chewed at the sand
  • hush’ whispered the sea
He has really shown and proved how good a writer he is in this book. Ted has kept a creative mind with this book. Amazing ideas.

Our Class Visit to Techni?uest.

On Wednesday 20th of May 2015 years 3, 4 and 5 went on a visit to Techniquest to learn about forces. After a long bus ride we were told the rules.
A short while afterwards we were inside having fun whilst learning about the fascinating wonders of science. There were things from flying bottles to giant pianos. There were lots of things to do and it was very hard to get bored. There was a water area and a dark room, in the dark room we could experiment with things like plasma balls and controlling different levels of mist.
Soon it was time for the forces show, we learnt about all of the different types of forces such as:
  • Push
  • Pull
  • Drop
  • Bounce

We had such a good time at Techniquest that we wanted to stay forever.

We made music!

As part of our topic is to look at the planets,we decided to create music to go with the different planets.    We used a variety of musical instruments and the knowledge we gained from our music lessons to create these pieces independently and organised ourselves into our own groups. We had a lot of fun creating these pieces and we hope you like them as much as we do!

Penalty Shoot Out

On Thursday the 11th July, 37 children from Years 5, 5/6 and 6 took part in the Maes-y-Coed  Penalty Shootout.  We all walked up to the Maritime Astroturf.  We were split up into two groups of 18 and 19.  The first group were split into four groups. The 19 children went over to the other side of the Astroturf to take penalties against a guest goal keeper AKA Mr Hall.  The children needed to get at least 3 to get to the next round.  Lots of money was raised for our school and our local football club.  Many thanks to Barclays Bank.

PC Rob talks about anti social behaviour

On the 8th May PC Rob Thomas came in to speak about anti social behaviour. We learnt about what to do and what not to do in a place for the community. We drew a park that had to appeal to all the community; that means children, adults, babies, elderly people, teenagers and pets. Once we had drawn the park we went through some of the anti social things that would happen to it and he told us some stories about what he'd seen as a policeman.  Then we swapped over parks and put post-it notes on things we could do to ruin their park with anti social behaviour. Then PC Rob Thomas showed us some real life pictures of anti social behaviour.
